Core Competencies
Standards of Professional Performance
Standard 10. Collegiality
The nurse administrator interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues. As a nurse manager I provide ongoing feedback to staff regarding their job performance. I foster an environment that supports ongoing education and seek input from staff to facilitate planning for educational needs and desires. I am a resource and a mentor for informal leaders who desire leadership opportunities such as chairing a committee or staff who are working towards specialty certification. Through staff recognition and unit celebrations we foster a healthy work environment.
Standard 11. Collaboration
The nurse administrator collaborates with all levels of nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders, and other stakeholders. I support active unit based councils within our centers that include representation of all staff roles. The entire team is engaged in collaborating to support safe and efficient processes. I place great importance on communication and ensure all staff are educated and informed when changes must be made. I encourage partnerships with our physicians when working to improve and change processes.
Standard 12. Ethics
In this standard the nurse administrator integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice. I assist staff in ethical decisions and ensure that established organizational policies and procedures are followed. As I lead others it is important that I take care of myself and manage stress. I seek the support of my nurse manager peers for collaboration and assistance with decision-making when needed.
