Standard 13. Research
This standard focuses on the nurse administrator integrating research into practice. In my current work setting we look at how we can improve processes. We are able to collect data and explore best practices to support practice changes. We collaborate with other departments to ensure best practices.
Standard 14. Resource Utilization
The standard of resource utilization states the nurse administrator considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing and other services. As a nurse manager I ensure that staff understands our operational budgets including responsible use of supplies and appropriate staffing to ensure optimal patient care. As part of my graduate studies I completed a scholarly project focused on efficiency of the elective surgery scheduling practices. The fifth document in the Artifacts section includes the guidelines that were established and implemented as a result of my project. The sixth document is my scholarly project synthesis paper.
Standard 15. Leadership
This standard speaks to the nurse administrator providing leadership in the professional practice setting. As a nurse leader I strive for teamwork, safety, quality with frequent communication around our goals and process improvement activities. I place great value on mentoring and professional growth through ongoing education and learning opportunities. I realize the value of utilizing and fostering the intellectual capital within our organization, within our department, and on our units. As part of my graduate studies I studied Christine Covell's middle range theory of nursing intellectual capital. The seventh document in the Artifacts section includes this theory critque paper.
Standard 16. Advocacy
This standard states that the nurse administrator is an advocate for the protection and rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nursing and other professions, and institutions and organizations, especially related to health and safety. I support having patients involved in their own care and having access to their health information. As a nurse manager I advocate to protect patient information through ensuring medical records are secure and kept confidential. I support and guide staff in giving exceptional care that supports quality outcomes.
